DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. — Just days before Veteran’s Day, a soldier from Southern Oregon was killed serving in Afghanistan.

Captain James Nehl was from Gardiner near Reedsport, in Douglas County. The Department of Defense says he was killed in small arms fire while on patrol.

Captain Nehl was based in Fort Riley, Kansas. He is the eighth Douglas County resident killed in Afghanistan or Iraq since 2005, and the 136th from Oregon.
