Oregon Native Among the AZ Lives Taken

John Percin

WEST LINN, Ore. — We now know more about the Oregon man who died on his second day on the job.

The last day of John Percin’s life started with a prayer.

“Lord watch over us as we go into battle. Amen.”

He posted that on Facebook at 6:23 Sunday morning. By Sunday afternoon, the battle was over. He spent most of his life in Oregon. Percin grew up in West Linn, graduated from high school in 2007, but struggled with personal problems.

In 2010, he went to Arizona, got his life together, and found a mentor. Eventually he graduated from fire school.

“I lived upstairs and he lived downstairs,” his mentor, Mike Jones, said. “He came upstairs, he had this huge smile on his face. He’s like I did it. I passed. He pumped his fist. He was just so excited. He had some tears in his eyes. He said I can’t believe I’m finally living my dream.”

Percin was only 24.
