SALEM, Ore. – Despite Oregonians voting no, a ban on gillnets could still go into effect on Oregon rivers.
The Oregon and Washington Fish and Wildlife Commissions are nearing a decision on a push to ban the use of gillnets to catch salmon on the main stem of the Columbia River.
The Oregon Commission will vote Friday, on a plan that will phase out the nets over the next three years. The proposed new rules were requested by Governor Kitzhaber.
