Oregon Lawmakers Witness D.C. Incident

MerkleyWASHINGTON, D.C. — Oregon lawmakers were right in the middle of the incident on Thursday. Senator Jeff Merkley heard the gunshots while walking back to the capitol.

He and other senators took cover behind a parked car, then ran to safety inside the capitol building.

“Police came running from the Capitol toward the intersection we were headed to and started yelling at us to take cover and get down,” said Sen. Jeff Merkley.

Congressman Greg Walden says he was in his office when he got the call about the lockdown. He thanks capitol security for doing their job.

Representative Peter Defazio also released a statement saying he’s grateful to police officers guarding the building, staff and members of Congress.
