MEDFORD, Ore. — The former “Fast Boyz and Girlz Toys” store was training grounds to learn how to save fellow firefighters.
Medford-Fire Rescue worked on exercises to rescue each other during dangerous situations. They worked on dragging techniques, airway management, and breaking through walls.
The Oregon Department of Transportation offered the building to fire crews. The city of Medford works with the department and other property owners to find structures to practice in.
“When they get property owners that are looking to demolish their buildings, it’s kind of a cheap way to get rid of the buildings. Sometimes we can burn them, and that saves them the demolition,” said Firefighter Ryan Stidham.
This week fire crews focused on the interior. Next week, they’ll practice with the exterior of the building.
