Number of Stolen & Lost Guns Increasing

MEDFORD, Ore. — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is reporting that the number of stolen and lost guns has been on the rise.

Up through this point in 2013, 44 guns have been either stolen or lost. They say, a majority of the thefts occur during both residential & vehicle burglaries.

For this reason, it is important to keep them locked in a gun safe. Officials claim that most of the guns taken are not locked up, but rather left out in the open. Also, all owners are advised to have documentation of their gun.

Take a picture and be sure to have the serial number written down. When guns are lost or stolen, the serial number is entered into state and national databases. Accurate pictures and serial numbers have allowed many owners to receive their guns back after which they have been stolen.

The Sheriff’s Office would also like to remind individuals who have guns at home to keep the weapons secure with a gun lock. Gun locks can be found at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement offices at no cost.
