ASHLAND, Ore. -- Solar power is lighting the historic Ashland Armory.

Former Mayor Alan DeBoer installed 56 solar panels atop the three-story armory building to provide enough electricity for the auditorium and offices inside.

The solar installation was completed earlier this month and will provide 11,200 watts of energy to the 30,000-square-foot building that DeBoer has owned since 1998.

The installation was done by DeBoer's brother-in-law, Jim Green, who owns Green Meadows Construction.

DeBoer said he became interested in switching to solar five years ago, but only recently found a company that would put panels on the 96-year-old building.
