Yesterday, Jackson County commissioners approved using alternative water sources for the project. It is a requirement that all rest areas be connected to a water supply. In this case the water supply would be served by the city of Ashland.
The new Siskiyou safety rest area and welcome center will be located northbound on Interstate 5 between mile markers 12 and 13.
Chair Board of Commissioners Don Skundrick hopes it will get visitors into Ashland and boost tourism. Skundrick says: “It may cause people to stop and say. ‘Hey, we’re right here in Ashland. I hear a lot about it. It’s right there. It’s easy to get off the freeway. Let’s go check it out.’”
The new rule will allow ODOT to tap Talent irrigation water for landscaping purposes. The Oregon Department of Transportation is hoping to break ground on the project later this year.
