Barry is a 4-year-old dutch shepherd and he will be the departments new K-9. He will be a patrol canine, meaning he’ll be responsible for tracking down and chasing suspects.
Barry will probably work for five years and his training will be constant.
“He’s been trained for four years and I’m a new handler. So, a lot of it is getting me up to speed on what we’re doing. But he’s a forgiving dog, he makes training a lot of fun,” explained handler, Paul Mellgren.
In addition to Barry, there are other k-9’s with the Medford Police Department where their sole purpose is to help detect drugs.
