New K-9 Joins Medford Police

BARRYMEDFORD, Ore. — A new officer is joining the Medford Police Department from Holland.

Barry is a 4-year-old dutch shepherd and he will be the departments new K-9. He will be a patrol canine, meaning¬†he’ll be responsible for tracking down and chasing suspects.

Barry will probably work for five years and his training will be constant.

“He’s been trained for four years and I’m a new handler. So, a lot of it is getting me up to speed on what we’re doing. But he’s a forgiving dog, he makes training a lot of fun,” explained handler, Paul Mellgren.

In addition to Barry, there are other k-9’s with the Medford Police Department where their sole purpose is to help detect drugs.
