New Details on OSP Shooting

Oregon State PoliceNEAR THE DALLES, Ore. — Names of the officer and the suspect in an officer-involved shooting have now been released.

Oregon State Police say 26-year-old Trooper Matthew Zistel was working construction zone traffic safety overtime enforcement on Thursday when he stopped a vehicle for a speeding violation.

During the traffic stop, Oregon State Police say 34-year-old John Van Allen II and the trooper fired more than one round from their handguns. Allen then fled the scene in the vehicle and was found dead slumped over the wheel a short time later. An autopsy completed Friday morning at the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office concluded Allen died from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

During the incident, police say Allen was accompanied in the vehicle his three children; a 10-year old girl, and two boys ages 13 and 15. They were placed in Department of Human Services’ custody on Thursday night and their names are not being released.

The investigation into the shooting is continuing. The Sherman County District Attorney’s Office will make a decision on whether to present this to a Grand Jury.
