Near Drowning in Cottage Grove Reservoir

Suspect Injures and Threatens PoliceCOTTAGE GROVE, Ore. — A close call for a woman in Cottage Grove Friday morning, after deputies say she nearly drowned in the Cottage Grove Reservoir.

Lane County Search and Rescue says the woman was missing for more than an hour and had to be transported by helicopter to RiverBend Hospital.

Deputies were called to the reservoir just after 1:00 a.m. Friday. Friends who were camping with 40-year-old Sherri Miller called 911, saying she had gone missing while they were out for a late night swim.

The Lane County Sheriff’s Office, Search and Rescue, and Life Flight quickly responded to the scene. When the rescue boat finally reached Miller, she was non-responsive, and they were able to get her breathing again. They say the temperature of the water likely helped keep her alive.

“It’s not like the frigid Willamette or the McKenzie waters are now, so it does have some warmth to it, and that may have helped her keep functional out there for the over an hour that she had been missing,” says John Miller, the Lane County Search and Rescue Coordinator.

The search and rescue boat brought Miller to shore at Lakeside Park.

Deputies believe alcohol may have been a factor.
