Names Released in Interstate 84 Crash

092813.fatal.i84_mp40.1NEAR BONNEVILLE DAM, Ore. — Oregon State Police now say a fight between a man and his girlfriend resulted in a fatal crash on Interstate 84

On Saturday night, police say the male driver of the van, 31-year-old Austin Monroe Herd, allegedly began fighting with his girlfriend, 30-year-old Nicole Quintana, in the front passenger seat. During the fight, the van swerved off course and crashed into a guardrail about four miles west of Cascade Locks.

Police say the driver fell from the open door of the van while it was still moving. Oregon State Police report the van’s driver door was secured by a bungee cord stretched from the interior door handle to the steering column. The temporary repair was in place because of a door malfunction preventing it from being closed and secured.

Oregon State Police say the man was not using a seat belt. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Quintana and another passenger in the van, Jessy R. Walters, were not injured in the crash. Both were transported to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center for a medical evaluation. Police say Quintana did have minor injuries consistent with being involved in a physical altercation before the crash.
