NEAR EUGENE, Ore. — A military deserter wanted out of Missouri was caught on I-5 south of Eugene on Friday.
According to Oregon State Police, 46-year-old Elmer Frederick Hoffman III was pulled over by a trooper for failure to display a front vehicle plate. After first providing a name and birth date that police could not verify, Hoffman then acknowledged he was a deserter wanted by the U.S. Army and was using a stolen Colorado license plate.
OSP says he fled Missouri back in March, as he was facing a court martial trial related to child rape and child indecency charges. Oregon State Police say Hoffman fled while on trial, and during his absence, he was convicted on two counts of Child Rape and two counts of Indecent Liberties with a Child.
Hoffman was held for the Army at the Lane County Jail. A woman was also in the vehicle with Hoffman; OSP positively identified her, but she was not arrested.
