WASHINGTON, D.C. — Momentum is building for a bill that one of Oregon’s U.S. Senators is backing.
Senator Jeff Merkley is co-sponsoring a bill to make workplace discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation illegal.
Oregon’s Bureau of Labor and Industries says Portland has had a few reports of that kind of discrimination, but no incidents out of Southern Oregon have been reported.
“I would expect in the future, you might see more cases as people are aware of their rights, but it is something that we do hear about occasionally,” said Brad Avakian, the Commissioner of the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries.
On Wednesday, a Senate committee gave the green light for the bill, paving the way for it to head to the full Senate.
