From Siskiyou County to Portland, and across the country, there have been dozens of deaths from the flu and many of those are healthy people with no underlying medical problems.
Many people are wondering exactly how a healthy person can die from a common virus. Dr. Jason Kuhl of Providence Medford Medical Center provides insight in the video above.
Medical experts from Providence Medical Center say deaths from flu complications usually involve a secondary infection. Doctors say influenza is an upper respiratory virus, so it may also impact lungs and bronchial tubes. This can cause pneumonia, which is usually what can compromise systems and cause death.
They say people with lung and respiratory diseases are more at risk for these complications. Children under 5, pregnant women, and older people are also more susceptible. Doctors say vaccinations are important and it is not too late to get them.
