MEDFORD, Ore. — A Medford man is sharing his experience of surviving behind enemy lines in World War 2.
Harold Hayes told his story in the new book “The Secret Rescue,” by author Cate Lineberry. Hayes was a part of a squadron of medics and nurses who helped transport the wounded away from the front lines.
In 1943 their plane was attacked by German fighters and crash landed in Albania. For the next two months, Hayes and his team hid from the Nazis and journeyed across the country. They were rescued in an operation by British and American agents.
Hayes and his comrades kept the story a secret for decades, but he says he finally decided it was the right time to share it. The book will be available at the Medford Barnes and Noble, as well as online through Amazon.
