Medford Police Warn of Craigslist Scam

craigslistMEDFORD, Ore. — In the past 4 weeks, eight Southern Oregonians have been the target of a scam stemming from Craigslist.

Victims responded to an ad regarding employment as a housekeeper, nanny or childcare provider.

Police say any job that offers advance pay that is above the going rate is a red flag. The Craigslist website offers a section called “scams and frauds” that will list known problem ads.

“I can hide behind email, I can hide behind cell phone numbers and phone numbers. I can hide all of that and hide my true identity. If we meet face to face it’s much harder to do that,” explained Medford Police Sgt. Brent Mak.

Out of the eight cases Medford Police are aware of, the bank has been able to intercept four transactions before money was sent, but four others are out money.
