MEDFORD, Ore. — A Medford man finds a burglar in his kitchen and fights him off to defend his family.
The homeowner spoke exclusively to NewsWatch 12 about the incident. The victim says he was protecting his 11-year-old son who was sleeping in a nearby same room.
This all happened overnight in a home located on the 500 block of south Grape Street. The victim says he was watching TV when he saw a shadow in his kitchen. He went to investigate and saw a man standing there.
Police say that man was 20-year-old Michael Mak. The homeowner says he yelled at him to get out. When he didn’t, the homeowner started punching Mak, which sent the intruder running. The man did not want to show his face on camera, but says he’s lost a sense of security.
“I’m kind of traumatized over it. And my son too, today, he’s wanting to make weapons. And I told him, we’re all right. You got your dad, I’m a pretty good weapon,” he said.
Police found Michael Mak hiding in some nearby bushes. They say Mak broke into the home through a back window. They also found a stolen camera wrapped in a sweatshirt outside and say it belonged to a neighbor nearby.
Mak was lodged in jail on charges of Burglary 1st Degree, Theft 2nd Degree, Assault 4th Degree, Criminal Mischief 3rd Degree, Unlawful Entry into a Motor Vehicle, and 2 counts of Harassment. His bail was set at $41,000.
