EUGENE, Ore. – Marcus Mariota was the first freshman quarterback to start the season opener for the University of Oregon since 1991. He certainly didn’t play like it. Mariota showed all the poise of a veteran, going 19-23 for 216 yards and three touchdowns in less than two quarters of work. The Ducks dominated Arkansas St. 57-34, a score that doesn’t tell the story of the game.
Oregon led 50-3 halfway through the second quarter and pulled most of its starters before halftime. De’Anthony Thomas scored three touchdowns on seven offensive touches, racking up 119 yards on three carries and four receptions.
The Ducks (1-0) host Fresno St. Saturday at Autzen Stadium.
