Man Seriously Injured from Firework

6-29 dude blows off handMEDFORD, Ore. — A Medford man lost nearly his whole hand while trying to light off fireworks after drinking.

Police showed up to the 200 block of Mace Road at just before 12:30am Friday to find the man with a, “significant amputation injury.”

Police say after several hours of drinking, 37-year old David Jerald Jenkins decided to light off illegal mortar rockets. When one didn’t launch, the man removed it, tried to relight it, and it exploded in his hand.

“We just heard this loud boom, it sounded like a bomb went off, literally,” said neighbor Chris Bray. “So we ran outside and saw ambulances, fire trucks, and about five police cars rolling up.”

Jenkins had to be taken to Oregon Health and Sciences University for treatment. His condition is unknown, but he has been charged with Illegal Possession of Fireworks.
