Man Rescued from Bottom of Cliff

rescue web 2 NEAR BROOKINGS, Ore. — A Brookings man was saved via a search and rescue mission Friday evening after the Curry County Sheriff’s Office got a 911 transfer call from the Brookings Police Department alerting them of the situation. Residents of the Rainbow Rock Condominiums just north of Brookings on Highway 101 reported that a male subject had fallen over a 200 foot cliff. The Curry County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team and the Brookings Fire Department worked together to safely bring 57-year old Bruce Whetsel to the top of the embankment by use of a rope system, stokes and manpower.

Whetsel was transported to Curry General Hospital by Cal Ore Life Flight Ambulance. His Golden Retriever that was with him and un-harmed was taken to Pennies for Pooches. Officials said it was determined that Whetsel had not fallen from the top of the embankment as first reported, but he had tried to climb up from the bottom after walking along the beach and slipped and injured himself.
