HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Volunteers from Southern Oregon are now helping in Mississippi, where hundreds of thousands of people have lost power.
Members of the Southern Oregon Red Cross say there are helping to provide shelter and food for people living near Hattiesburg.
Red Cross Volunteer Phil Gonzalez said a caravan of Red Cross vehicles and power company trucks have been making their way from Florida to Mississippi. They want to make sure people affected by the storm have access to some basic necessities.
“There’s a lot of flooding, a lot of flooding,” Gonzales said. “We’re providing shelter for their people, and feeding. That’s been basically it, sheltering and feeding, and that’s what we specialize in.”
Gonzalez and other members of the Red Cross will spend Thursday night manning an evacuation shelter for those affected by the storm.
