Local Woman Charged in Gold Beach

Marlyn SchaferGOLD BEACH, Ore. — A political figure in Curry County has been arrested for Aggravated Theft in the First Degree. In June of 2014 board members of the Gold Beach Senior Center discovered some financial irregularities which prompted an internal review of the centers records and an investigation by the Gold Beach Police Department and Curry County District Attorney’s Office.

On Thursday, a Curry County Grand Jury met to hear testimony on the matter and has indicted Marlyn Schafer, 70 of Gold Beach, on a charge of Aggravated Theft in the First Degree, which in the State of Oregon the minimum amount that would need to be stolen to receive this charge is $10,000 in a six month period.

Mrs. Schafer had served as the treasurer of the Gold Beach Senior Center for about six years until June of 2014. Mrs. Schafer currently holds an elected position on the curry Health District Board of Directors, most recently elected in 2011. She has served one previous term as a member of the Curry Health District Board of Directors as well as having been a two-term Curry County Commissioner and a three-term mayor for the City of Gold Beach.

Mrs. Schafer surrendered herself on the warrant to the Curry County Jail where she was booked on the charge. The investigation is still ongoing.
