MEDFORD, Ore. — First Sergeant Mike Walker went to Bob Thomas Automotive on Friday night thinking he was picking up his old truck. What he thought was going to be a quick repair of the four-wheel-drive, turned into a community effort to give him so much more.
When Walker arrived at the shop, he was surprised by several friends and family members as well as volunteers who helped do a complete remodel of his truck.
Steve Banry, who is friends with Walker, helped coordinate the effort, and was able to recruit 19 Rogue Valley businesses to help make the overhaul a success.
Several business owners who participated said it was an easy decision to donate the time, money, and manpower to the project. Many said with Memorial Day coming up, they wanted to show their appreciation as Sgt. Walker prepares to deploy to Afghanistan in June for his third overseas tour.
