MEDFORD, Ore. — A boy from the Applegate Valley is planning to scale the world’s largest freestanding mountain.
11-year old Lane Mendell will climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness for children in need. Next week, he has a flight planned to Tanzania to take on the mountain.
Mendell has Cerebral Palsey, but that hasn’t stopped him from exercising and training for the big climb. His grandfather runs an orphanage in Africa and he plans on climbing the mountain to help the children that are in the orphanage.
Mendell presented his plans to the Jacksonville Rotary Club Thursday morning in hopes to raise pledges for the climb next week.
