Kerby Shooting Not the First for Suspect

KERBY, Ore. – State police investigating this weekend’s shooting in Kerby say it isn’t the first time this suspect shot and killed a neighbor. Donald Easley is being investigated in the shooting death of neighbor Leron Estes.

According to the district attorney, Easley was cleared of charges in 2009 after shooting and killing neighbor Kenneth Vaughn. Vaughn was the previous owner of the property where Estes lived, and where he was reportedly shot on Saturday.

Neighbors say Vaughn was mentally unstable. He apparently had threatened people with violence in the past and had a tumultuous relationship with Easley.

Neighbors say that shooting happened during a confrontation on Easley’s property, but no witnesses were present. Investigators in this case say that incident will not be impacting their investigation into whether or not this shooting was justified.

“Each individual case is going to be different in nature,” said state police Detective Sergeant Jeff Fitzgerald. “And that’s why it’s really important for us to go through all the information that we have – the history between the two neighbors – before we make some type of determination on the shooting and whether it was justified or not.”

State police and the Josephine County district attorney met this afternoon to go over the details of the case. They say they are unable to provide any more details that could impede the investigation.
