GRANTS PASS, Ore. – The man whom police say shot and killed his neighbor earlier this month appeared before a judge in Josephine County Court.
Donald Easley appeared briefly via a video linkup to the Josephine County Jail. The judge denied bail, and scheduled a preliminary hearing for Sept. 24.
Oregon State Police say Easley shot and killed Laron Estes on Sept. 7 during an altercation near their homes in Kerby.
Estes’ family said they are grateful that Easley has been denied bail, and said it allows family and neighbors to feel secure.
“It’s in God’s hands,” said Barbara Hicks, Estes’ wife. “And it’s in the justice system right now, and he will pay for what he’s done. And I just feel very, very safe now.”
Estes’ family is currently planning a memorial service. They have also set up a memorial donation fund at all Washington Federal Bank locations to help pay for funeral expenses.
