Crews Say Fire Was Intentionally Set

ssa hot note 2MEDFORD, Ore. — The fire that destroyed an abandoned building in south Medford yesterday was intentionally set, according to Medford firefighters.

The building, which sat just off Kings Highway, used to be an experiment station for the OSU Extension Service, but had been abandoned for a few years. Medford Fire said the fire was human-caused, and they are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Firefighters said they were told kids would sometimes hang out around the building, but they have not named a suspect.

“This was certainly an area where kids cruise by,” said fire investigator Samantha Metheny. “It’s an abandoned building, and it’s a place of curiosity.

Firefighters were able to stop the fire quickly Tuesday and prevented it from spreading too far into a field of dry grass. Firefighters said OSU Extension employees had planned to cut the grass, but were not able to do the work before the fire broke out.
