MEDFORD, Ore. — This time of year is an ideal time to plant trees in our area. OSU Master Gardener Rhianna Simes tells you when and how to plant a tree.
Simes says fall is the ideal time to plant trees in the Northwest, especially once they are dormant or have lost their leaves. Planting at this time gives the tree a chance to develop a healthy root system before spring, when leaves develop.
Before digging the hole, identify the trunk flair. Make sure to plant the tree so that the trunk flair is at least 1-2 inches above the soil surface. Always water the tree once it is planted, even if it is raining.
