Medford, Ore. — Monarch butterflies are beautiful, but are also important as pollinators. Monarch butterflies depend on milkweed plants for life. In fact, the plant is the only larval host for monarch butterflies.
Milkweed is disappearing for a variety of reasons including new developments, the repeated use of glyphosate and roadside management.
That’s why OSU Master Gardeners are urging people to plant milkweed plants in their own gardens. You can learn more about it by attending a class Thursday, April 24th. The $10 class is happening at 7 p.m. at the OSU Extension Service.
You’ll also be able to buy milkweed starts and seeds at the Spring Garden Fair, happening in the first weekend of May at Compton Arena at the Jackson County fairgrounds.
