APPLEGATE, Ore. — For the third time, a Southern Oregon man will be behind bars for illegal gold mining.
52-year-old David Everist was sentenced earlier this week to 30 days in jail. He was convicted of illegally living on and working his mining claim in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest without filing a plan with the Forest Service.
Everist maintains the land, south of Applegate, is his private property and the Forest Service has no authority. This is his third conviction over the mining claim since 2009.
