NEAR ASHLAND, Ore. — Police are continuing an investigation into a fatal crash on I-5 from Friday night. At approximately 11:35 p.m., Oregon State Police troopers responded to the head-on collision near milepost 11.
Troopers say one of the vehicles was traveling the wrong direction, northbound in the southbound lanes.
Investigators say Derek Massey, 41, of Talent was driving a 2003 Pontiac Vibe northbound in the southbound lanes when he collided head-on into a 2006 Ford Expedition driven by Ryan Thompson, 36, of French Gulch, Calif.
Both men were driving alone.
Thompson sustained non-life threatening injuries and Massey was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. Massey’s next of kin has been notified, according to police.
Investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing. Police say at this time they don’t know if intoxicants were a contributing factor.
