HOWARD PRAIRIE, Ore. — One of the most popular campgrounds and resorts in Southern Oregon will be under the Direct Management of Jackson County this summer.
Jackson County Parks and Recreation has cancelled the concessionaire lease for Howard Prairie Resort following non-payment of taxes and lease fees. That means the county will now operate not only the campgrounds around the lake, but also the resort itself.
“We’re not adding staff as a result of this. What we will be doing is hiring a lot of temporary help. We hire lots of summer temporary help to run the resort, uh, to run all of our parks. That’s how we’ll be running the resort, which is the same way previous operators have done it also,” said County Parks Director John Vial.
Right now there’s still several feet of snow around the campgrounds, and the boat basin is iced-in. Vial says the resort will open by April 15th and will be ready for the start of the fishing season April 22nd.
