VALLEY COUNTY, Idaho — The massive manhunt for a murder and kidnapping suspect has ended; the 16-year-old San Diego victim is safe, the abductor killed.
A small army of heavily-armed federal agents and police spent Saturday scouring 300 square miles of rugged, steep terrain in rural Idaho for 40-year-old James DiMaggio and Hannah Anderson. Police said an FBI tactical agent shot and killed the California man suspected of kidnapping and murder.
Police believe DiMaggio killed Hannah’s 8-year-old brother Ethan Anderson and their mother Christina Anderson at his house outside San Diego, then burned the house down and ran off with Hannah.
“Well, the first thing is we were elated that Hannah appeared to be safe and was rescued and be reunited with her family in the near future,” said San Diego Co. Sheriff Bill Gore. “Obviously, we would have liked Mr. DiMaggio to surrender and face justice in a court of law, but that’s not going to be the case.”
