Grocery Stores Stay Busy on July 4

4th of July SpendingMEDFORD, Ore. — Many people are celebrating a three day weekend this year with the Fourth of July falling on a Friday, and businesses said they are reaping the benefits.

At Food 4 Less in Medford almost every cash register was open.  According to managers, the store has been busy all week leading up to Independence Day with people buying burgers, hot dogs, ice, and sodas.

“Typically we are really busy before the Fourth of July,” said Renee West, a General Manager at Food 4 Less. “When it falls on a weekend like this though, it’s steadier, and it will continue on for the whole weekend.”

A recent survey conducted by the National Retail Federation estimates two-thirds of Americans observing the holiday will celebrate with a cookout. Those Americans will spend an average of $68 per household on cookout supplies and groceries.
