Grass Fires Keep Weekend Crews Busy

MEDFORD, Ore. — Sunday afternoon was a busy one for some local fire crews. Around 3 p.m. Applegate Fire District responded to a reported grass fire moving up a hill in Jacksonville.

With assistance from the Oregon Department of Forestry, Bureau of Land Management, and Medford Fire, the blaze was contained to about one acre. Applegate Fire officials say it was a legal burn, but the winds picked up and it grew out of control.

Meanwhile, Medford Fire crews responded to another legal burn on Table Rock Road near Morningside Avenue around the same time Sunday afternoon. The residents thought they put out their burn, but an hour later, they noticed it was ignited again. Fire crews quickly contained that blaze.

Officials say the fire season is slightly more active this time of year than normal. That’s mostly because of the dry, warm weather. Fire crews recommend burning as early in the morning as possible.
