Grass Fire Starts in Transient Camp

grass fire firefighter imagerMEDFORD, Ore. — A fire at a homeless camp spread to a nearby field Friday morning and sent up a black plume of smoke that could be seen for miles.

The fire was in a field between Bullock Road and the Rogue Regency Inn in Medford. Crews from Medford Fire and the Oregon Department of Forestry responded and were able to knock it down within a few minutes. The flames only burned about a quarter of an acre.

Medford Police were also on scene interviewing witnesses, and firefighters said that homeless camp has been a problem before.

”It’s kind of a known transient area, we’ve responded to at least a couple of fires here,” said Ken Goodson, Medford Fire Battalion Chief. “The difference between the last fire and now is, it’s summertime, it’s the 4th of July, a hot day.”

Medford Fire said human-caused fires are some of their biggest concerns this time of year.
