The Grants Pass Department of Public Safety and the Gospel Rescue Mission are discussing the possibility of a sobering center similar to the William Moore center in Medford.
Officers say if a center like that existed it would provide a safe haven for people and cut down on costs. They say the hospital has never turned down an intoxicated person but it slows down medical attention to others in need.
“It can be an extended wait and sometimes those situations turn into disorderly conducts for other folks who are waiting to be seen for medical reason,” said Sgt. Todd Moran.
Police say there are no official plans to start one yet. The details of everything from location to funding still need to be worked out.
