GRANTS PASS, Ore. — A man who sexually abused his then 6-year-old cousin will spend 15 years behind bars.
The prosecuting attorney says 27-year-old David Tompkins abused her from 2003 to 2009. She came forward to police and they arrested him in November.
On Friday, the judge dropped several counts because Tompkins was willing to take accountability for his actions. The prosecuting attorney says the family agreed to the sentencing as well.
“What he did was horrible. He subjected that poor girl to sexual abuse for years. But to his credit he at least took accountability for that,” says Ryan Mulkins, Josephine County Deputy District Attorney.
“He is hoping to help others in the future. That he doesn’t want other people to follow in his steps. And commit more crime when you’ve been offended against,” says Victory Walker, defense attorney.
Tompkins will get credit for time served.
