MEDFORD, Ore. — The Grants Pass Nuggets rallied to beat Corvallis on a smokey day at Harry & David Field, the first day of the AAA Legion State Tournament. The Nuggets fell behind 5-1 through three and a half innings, but scored six runs in the next five inning to beat Corvallis 7-6. Tyler Bennett drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice fly which scored Matt Cole. Cole also earned the win for Grants Pass, pitching the eighth and ninth innings.
There weren’t the same fireworks in the nightcap of the first day of the tournament, as the hosts, the Medford Mustangs, lost to Columbia Gorge 3-0. Connor Mathisen pitched a complete game shutout for the Hustlers and also drove in all three of his team’s runs. Carter Glick also went the distance for the Mustangs in the loss.
The Nuggets will play Salem Post 58 on Thursday in the winners bracket while the Mustangs play an elimination game against the Portland Barbers.
