GP Downs Closes Successful Season

GP Downs Closes Successful SeasonGRANTS PASS, Ore. – The Southern Oregon Horse Racing Association faced an uphill battle in restoring Grants Pass Downs to its glory days. For several years the race track was losing significant money, thereby endangering its future. With the season concluding on Sunday, SOHRA director Rod Lowe says 2013 was a success.

SOHRA reported a season-long attendance of 21,460. The season handle was $302,059, which was up $780 per race from 2012. Organizers also cite the few injuries to both horses and jockeys as another sign of improvement.

In terms of the final standings, Luis Gonzalez led all jockeys with 20 wins. Don Young led all trainers for the second consecutive year with six wins.

With funding from the Oregon Racing Commission guaranteed for next year, Lowe says he’s already working on 2014.
