MEDFORD, Ore. — A state of emergency has been verbally declared in Oregon by Governor Kitzhaber due to the severe fire season.
The governor’s office says the emergency declaration enables the Oregon National Guard to mobilize resources on an as-needed basis to assist fire crews in the state.
While no large wildfires are currently burning in the Southwest District of the Oregon Department of Forestry, officials say, should something spark, resources will be available.
Governor Kitzhaber made the declaration after he determined a threat to life, safety, and property exists due to the fires. The governor also determined the threat exceeds the firefighting capabilities of local firefighting personnel and equipment.
