Gas Leak Forces Road Closure

GAS LEAKPHOENIX, Ore. – Emergency crews responded to Fern Valley Road Wednesday after construction crews working on the new Fern Valley Interchange in Phoenix accidentally hit a large gas line around noon.

Crews from Fire District 5 said the break caused a large amount of gas to escape, and they quickly worked with Avista Utilities workers to shut off the gas while they cleared the scene.

Police blocked Fern Valley Road between Luman Road and Highway 99 for about a half hour while workers cleared the scene.

The break occurred close to Highway 99, and firefighters said they wanted to keep the public safe.

“[It was] a two-inch line, that’s more of a main feeder line, not like a small residential line,” said Darin Welburn of Fire District 5. “So a higher risk for everybody involved.”

The cleanup and road closure only lasted about a half hour. Crews from Medford Fire and Rescue and Phoenix Police also responded to the scene.
