Gang Prevention Education At YMCA

By Danielle Craig

MEDFORD, Ore. — Gang prevention efforts are starting early with local police officers teaching elementary school children.

Two Medford police officers are spending time at YMCA’s summer camp, teaching kids about the GREAT (Gang Resistance Education And Training) program.

While the program is about gangs, the officers say it starts with learning how to be a ‘great’ citizen; how to choose between bad and good and why not to be a bully. The officers will be out at the YMCA for the rest of the week and again next month.

This program is a condensed version of what is taught in the schools throughout the year.
