Fluoride Will Be Added To Portland Water

PORTLAND, Ore. – Fluoride will be added to Portland’s water system.

The city council approved the ordinance Wednesday morning, meaning by March of 2014 fluoride will be added to the system.

Health experts say fluoride is effective against tooth decay, but opponents believe it is unsafe.

Voters in Portland twice rejected fluoridation before approving it in 1978, but that plan was overturned before any fluoride was added to the water.
