MEDFORD, Ore. — Home Instead Senior Care says 85 percent of seniors over the age of 65 have done nothing to prepare their homes for aging, and is now trying to change that.
The Making Home Safer for Seniors program is offering free home safety checks to anyone who want to have their home, or the home of an elderly relative inspected. For those who sign up, a trained consultant will go into the home and identify dangerous conditions and offer suggestions on how to make them safer.
The organization says that many of the changes like grab bars shower seats are inexpensive and easy to install.
The Home Instead consultants say that nearly a third of elderly people that must be admitted to the hospital or emergency room is due to a fall or accident in the home.
To schedule an inspection contact the Home Instead Senior Care offices in Grants Pass at (541) 479-2828, or Medford at (541) 734-2700.
Home safety tools and other resources can be found at the Making Home Safer for Seniors website.
