SALEM, Ore. — It’s meant to help families who have fallen on hard times, but instead, police say several people took advantage of Oregon’s food stamp program.
The alleged crimes took place at a Salem produce store. Police say they arrested the store owner as the ring leader of the fraud. Investigators say he was offering people 50-cents on the dollar for their food stamps.
Police say they discovered the food stamp fraud after monitoring the store for some time. In all, ten people were arrested. The store owner faces several charges including racketeering, computer fraud and identity theft.
