Flooding Causes Delays on I-5 Southbound

MEDFORD, Ore. — Southbound traffic on I-5 near milepost 32 was reduced to one lane Sunday afternoon while crews with the Oregon Department of Transportation pulled out a damaged culvert and worked on draining the water that had built up behind it.

“The water started eroding under that culvert to such a degree that it lifted the culvert up and if you were driving by you probably saw that start to tip up and probably saw a lake behind it,” said ODOT spokesman Gary Leaming.

The culvert will be replaced and secured to make sure the new culvert will be secure. ODOT officials say this problem isn’t uncommon along highways after heavy rains and crews were able to jump on Sunday’s problem before things got out of hand.
