New Fires Caused by Lightning

Lightning Strikes aug 22MEDFORD, Ore. — Between Wednesday night and 3 p.m. Thursday, there were 11 fires started by lightning in Jackson and Josephine counties.

4 of the 5 in Jackson County have been mopped up and contained, with the largest only growing to a fourth of an acre, but crews say the number of starts has been relatively small compared to the number of lightning strikes in the area.

“It’s one of those things where you look at a map and all you see, we have different color per when the strike and it’ll be a big blob of pink over here and big blob of yellow over there,” said Caitlin Goins with the Oregon Department of Forestry.

ODF crews will continue to monitor for flare ups in the coming days, left over from smoldering fires started from today’s lightning.
