Fight to Expand Oregon Wilderness

WASHINGTON D.C. — Oregon lawmakers are once again trying to expand the amount of Oregon wilderness that is protected under federal law.

Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley introduced several bills Thursday in Washington D.C., hoping to break gridlock that has defeated them in the past.

The bills would expand the Oregon Caves National Monument and Wild Rogue Wilderness, create new wilderness along the John Day River and create the Devil’s Staircase Wilderness in the Oregon Coast Range.

The bills cover areas similar to those that would be protected as wilderness in a proposal to increase logging revenues for Oregon timber counties.
